About Me

Hello, I am currently a graduating senior at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS. My major field of study is Library and Information Science with an emphasis on youth.

I have served about 4 years in a library setting as a shelver, assistant librarian, and am now a Children's Librarian. During that time, I have learned how to listen to patrons, encourage early literacy for beginning readers, and suggest materials to patrons that actually reflect their reading styles and interests without being biased in any way. Being a librarian has taught me how to help others to seek the intellectual gain that they desire and provide adequate resources that they can use.

What made me want to work in a library? Well, I love books and sharing the various adventures that stories can lead others in life. Books are more than just binded pages, they are inspirational doorways into new worlds, new ideas, and new aspects of living. The library also provides many educational influences for people of all ages, backgrounds, beliefs, and ethnicities.

Why did I want to work with children? Many children in Mississippi do not recieve adequate educational support and do not have access to available resources. I decided that I wanted to do something about that. While working at the Carnegie Public Library, I learned how to tell stories to children from pre-k to 12th grade in ways that encourage them to read and want to get an understanding of the world around them as well as get interested in discovering new imaginary worlds, perform puppet shows that make children laugh and learn good morals at the same time, and how to challenge teens to critically think about sociological issues and changes within books that relate to the world today through the use of a variety of books from different genres.
